Westmanstown Golf Club redeveloped 17th
Wonder Hole Wooed by Fair City Stars!!

30th April, 2019

Fair City Stars Sorcha Furlong (Orla),  George Mc Mahon (Mondo), Geoff Minogue (Tommy), Ryan Andrews, (Sean), Dave O’Sullivan, (Decco) and Victor Burke, (Wayne) joined golfers at the 17th hole on Westmanstown Golf Course today to test their skills and celebrate the reopening of the hole following a five-month closure to carry out its’ redevelopment.  The 17th hole has been re-developed making the hole a risk reward par five where the water penalty has been significantly increased in front of a tight narrow green.
Westmanstown Golf Club, located in Dublin 15 was originally designed by Eddie Hackett in 1988 on just 54 acres.  By 1991 an additional 47 acres was purchased and the 18-hole course was created, stretching the course to 6,400 yards. In 2002 a three year drainage programme was undertaken resulting in more reliable fairways and greens leading to better consistent/ continuity of golf throughout the year.
The original 4th hole became the 17th hole when eighteen holes were developed and with further development taking place on the hole in 2001 with the open drain at the back of the green been filled in and a water hazard feature developed on front of the green.  A new tee box was also added in 2011.
The need to upgrade the hole became more and more apparent in recent years leading to the redesign going out to an open competitive tendering process.  ReGolf Design Architects were appointed with Pro Golf to design and construct a new water hazard and associated features.  Westmanstown Golf Club and everyone involved in the process is very happy with the result which includes with the hazard extended to 40 meters from the original 10mtr lake with new water agitator and fountain with advanced new lake liner.
Honorary Greens Convenor Dan McInerney said “We are delighted with the reshape of the 17th hole, the entire project is a taste of future projects which will bring modern golf course design to a classic golf course layout at Westmanstown with the new design offering far more options for approach shots for players of all standards”
